![]() ![]() ![]() Readers of Flights might have been surprised when Tokarczuk’s Nobel lecture distanced herself from the autofictional vogue in favour of the empathetic virtues of omniscient narration, but she clearly isn’t a writer to be pinned down. ![]() But it was the digressively discursive Flights, a mix of memoir and invention themed around travel and the body, published in her native Poland in 2007 but only translated into English 10 years later, amid fashionable Anglo-American impatience with novelistic norms, which has done most to make her name on both sides of the Atlantic, where her 2018 Nobel win was generally greeted with enthusiasm instead of the “who?” that tends to be reserved for feted European grandees. O lga Tokarczuk became more widely known to English-speaking readers with the 2010 translation of Primeval and Other Times, a multigenerational fable of 20th-century life in a Polish village overseen by four angels. ![]()

![]() ![]() A muscle-bound baker who looks like he lifts logs on the weekends, Sora hasn’t thought of Jack since they were in elementary school together. But relationships aren’t built to last, so it shouldn’t be that hard. When her pledge to stay single in February inspires readers to #gosolo, Sora has a responsibility to empower her readers. What is it with the commercial love machine? Why do we pin our hopes on one romantic day, when staying home with a package of bacon and a bottle of tequila would be way better? Sora’s been betrayed and disappointed more than once and her heart is starting to feel like her Grandma Mitsuye’s antique Japanese ceramic bowl, with its many gold-filled cracks. The one thing that disrupts her inertia: an intense dislike for Valentine’s Day. She’d rather stay at home with her insufferable neighbor and her adorable pitbull. For Sora, minimal input, minimal expectations is the way to go. ![]() She’s the odd one out in a close-knit family of go-getters, including her Japanese-American mom, who hints about her need to lose weight, and her soon-to-be married, overachieving younger sister, who needs her to have a date for the wedding, since a wedding party couples' dance with their Scottish great uncle Bob simply won't do. ![]() ![]() Cheerfully irreverent, bitingly funny, and filled with romantic charm, Cara Tanamachi's The Second You're Single is all about navigating the most romantic month of the year, and how love always seems to arrive when you least expect it.įreelance writer Sora Reid believes in inertia. ![]() ![]() ![]() That Lincoln succeeded, Goodwin demonstrates, was the result of a character that had been forged by experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. ![]() Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. I can’t really explain why…but historical romance writers really do this trope justice. When it comes to second chance romance, I typically enjoy this trope the most in historical romance. Furthermore, the prologue might be an information overload if you didn’t read Seducing a Stranger/A Dark and Stormy Knight. But keep in mind that the events from the first book heavily influence the turn of events in Courting Trouble. If you’re new to Kerrigan Byrne, you will get a short breakdown of the events that unfolded in the first book. If you’ve read Morley’s book, then the prologue will act as a quick refresher. ![]() The author quickly summarizes the events from the first book Seducing a Stranger/A Dark and Stormy Knight during the prologue. ![]() I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.Ĭourting Trouble is the second book in the Goode Girls series and it features an angsty second chance romance between two lovers who were torn apart because of their difference in social class. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s an interesting concept that converts the former Buenos Aires Zoo to an interactive, educational, eco-friendly park. We were lucky to tour EcoParque before it opened to the public. Beware of the animals (or not) at EcoParque You can even book a Madero Tango Show with an optional dinner and tango lesson in advance. In fact, there are shows and lessons (tanguerias and malongas) in just about every neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Well-earned tips flew from the crowd when the dancers took a break. At the same time, we stared in wonderment as incredibly talented dancers demonstrated their art. It was here that we sipped coffee at an outdoor cafe in Durrego Square on a Saturday afternoon. Argentina’s Independence was announced in 1816 in Durrego Square, yet today it draws crowds for the tango.
